Your yorky is a member of your home. You want to take good care of your yorky. But where do you begin? There are some things that a yorky owner must know while planning for yorkie health care.
Most health care concerns for yorkys are just as any other pet or dog, although some special considerations may need to be kept in mind.
Yorkys in many ways are different than other breeds of dogs, and a yorky owner should know these important care concerns.
Veterinarian
A yorky must not only see a vet for regular checkups. Yorkys are prone to tooth decay, making vet dentals very important. A yorky must of course get all shots required of any dog, but take special care in the waiting room- your yorky will bark and may try to start a fight with other (even much larger) dogs in the waiting area.
At six weeks of age a series of four DHLPP/CCV vaccinations begins. At about every four weeks another of the set of shots will be administered. A yorky should receive appropriate heartworm medication beginning at 2 months.
Prevention Techniques
Just as you or I know that with the proper diet and exercise our overall lifestyle will benefit, so will our yorkys. A yorky does not need to run miles a day, but they do need plenty of area to play and venture about. A yorky will benefit from nutritious dog food and supplements, increasing overall stamina, quality of life for your pet, and longevity of life so you may enjoy your yorky for years to come.
Skin care
Check your yorky’s skin for hair loss or rashes, indications of yorky allergies. A yorky will show signs of skin conditions by noticeably licking their skin more than usual. At times you may find in these circumstances that your yorky’s skin is red. Your pet will most likely care for themselves. Skin problems may be inevitable from time to time, although regular bathing and grooming can prevent yorky’s from falling into this predicament.
