A yorky is a specific breed of dog, or one of the shortened names for the breed “yorkshire terrier.” A yorky is a smaller dog, actually classified as a toy breed. The yorkshire terrier weight breed standard is 3 to 7 pounds.
Sometimes a teacup yorkie is bred to be smaller but this is unethical. A yorky who meets the requirements of the breed standard, including the maximum weight of seven pounds is very small. A yorky has a short and stocky build.
The position of a yorky’s ears is very important. The yorky’s ears should stand straight toward the sky. If a yorky’s ears do not stand up the problem can easily be remedied by clipping the hair on the top third of the yorky’s ears. A yorky’s tail should be clipped soon after birth. The yorky body has a very low center of gravity, and will be close to the ground. The yorky coloring is very specific and important as well. A yorky should fall in one of the following color categories: A black and tan, black and gold, blue and tan, or blue and gold. Yorky leg hair and head hair should be a lighter color, either tan or gold. The yorky back, torso, or saddle should be a darker color, either black or blue. A yorky should always stand confidently, as though they are proud of the way they look.
